Over the weekend more than 20,000 runners hit the streets of Singapore for the latest 10k in Nike‘s We Run series.
Nearly 20,000 runners took to the streets of Singapore early this morning to run in the Nike We Run SG 10K race, Nike’s largest race in Singapore to date. The annual event presented avid runners with the unique opportunity to be part of Nike’s global We Run race movement, forging a new global community with 395,500 other runners from 34 cities worldwide through Nike’s most connected race series with innovative Nike+ technology.
Soh Rui Yong, 21, crossed the Nike We Run SG 10K finish line first, topping the race with a timing of 33:01.20. “It was an enjoyable race, I was leading the pace and it was a comfortable run throughout. The route was great and scenic, we went by the city area, the roads were wide, very suitable for a mass run!”
In the women’s category, Suzy Walsham, 38, completed the race in 35:35.53 beating the rest of the competitors to clinch the prize. “I am very happy with my run. I felt really strong and enjoyed the race! I paced myself well throughout and went faster than I expected. It was a fast course, with long straight routes and plenty of drink stations, I am just happy to be here!”
This year, runners gathered at the Esplanade Bridge for the race flag off at 7.15am and crossed the finish line at the Waterfront Promenade @ Marina Bay. Runners paced themselves against a scenic backdrop of Singapore’s city skyline, passing iconic buildings and structures such as Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay, The Sail and Marina Bay Financial Centre. The race route featured a variety of music zones to entertain and motivate runners along the way with rhythmic beats and music, keeping the energy up!
At the Nike We Run SG 10K Race Village located at the Waterfront Promenade @ Marina Bay, runners connected with each other and celebrated their running achievements. All finishers received a Finisher’s T-Shirt to commemorate the event and their running achievement. Participants and supporters were also treated to popular local music acts such as 53A, Goodfellas, DJ Electr^k^t, DJ Chrisp and DJ Candiceb, making the Nike We Run SG 10K a one-of-a-kind race in Singapore, integrating music and entertainment to enhance the overall experience for the participants.
The Nike We Run SG 10K is part of a global movement and to mark the race transitioning across cities, a “torch bearer” is appointed in every city, passing the digital We Run “torch” across the world through photos, all of which were taken while running the race. Mark Ong, 33, internationally-known shoe customizer, ran the “torch” and is already looking forward to next year’s run. “I love the energy at the Nike We Run SG 10K race with 20,000 runners and great music. I really enjoyed being a part of this and capturing my experience via photos,” added Ong.
This year, Nike Singapore donated SGD10,000 to AG Home, a home for troubled teens. More than 10 runners represented AG Home and enjoyed the experience of running in the Nike We Run SG 10K 2012.
“We are very pleased to deliver yet another unique Nike experience to the running community in Singapore. The Nike We Run SG 10K has brought 20,000 runners together while integrating music and connecting them as they motivate each other. We certainly hope that the energy and spirit experienced today will inspire runners to fulfill their potential,” said Vijaya Kumar Jayaraj, Marketing Manager, Nike Singapore.
The Nike We Run race series is Nike’s most connected race series yet, integrating the innovative Nike+ technology. The race series kicked off on Aug. 26 in Riga, Latvia, and will conclude on Dec. 15 in Santiago, Chile.
