The years ’95 and ’97 come to mind when thinking of Air Max; however, the Nike Air Max 96 was released between those two years, in 1996. Often going unnoticed, the Air Max 96 was originally released in two colorways for men, Purple and Scream Green, and two colorways for women, Teal and Royal Blue. It was designed by Sergio Lozano, who had previous success on the AM95. The Air Max 96 was overlooked and less popular than Lozano’s predecessor.
The Air Max 96 featured similar technology compared to the 95. Highlighted with multi-density visible Air Max unit in the heel and forefoot. Constructed with synthetic leather on the upper, the Swoosh lays proudly on the ankle.
Today, the originals are hard to come by, but the Retro versions adapt to the current colors and styles. The Nike Air Max 96 features the Air Max 180 sole, a style used in the “One Time Only” package and on several other models. The last time Nike released the silhouette in true form was in 2016.
